Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship-Hi and welcome back to Ice Cream Day on "Camp TV."
Have you ever made ice cream from scratch?
It's actually pretty simple, not to mention fun.
And you don't need any fancy equipment to make it.
I've got everything you need right here, starting with some good old-fashioned measuring cups and measuring spoons.
Just like a ruler, a measuring cup has measurement marks on it to tell us how much of something we have.
And these measuring tools measure capacity.
Capacity means how much space something -- in this case an ingredient -- takes up.
So in order of the biggest to smallest measurements, this recipe calls for 3 cups of ice... ♪♪ ...2 cups of heavy cream.
By the way, you can make ice cream from heavy cream, half and half, or milk.
And if you don't eat dairy products, you can make ice cream from oat, almond, or coconut milk.
Now we need to measure 1/3 cup of kosher salt.
♪♪ And now we move on to measuring spoons.
First, we need 2 tablespoons of sugar... ♪♪ ♪♪ ...and finally, 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla.
Whoops!
Cooking can get messy sometimes.
You'll also need one big resealable plastic bag and one small.
In the smaller plastic bag, combine the cream, vanilla, and sugar.
♪♪ Carefully push out all of the excess air and seal it tight.
In the other baggie, combine the ice and salt.
Why salt?
I'm glad you asked.
Salt helps keep the ice frozen for longer than it would be on its own, and it helps make the cream cold enough to thicken and freeze.
♪♪ Now, the bag is gonna get pretty cold, so I suggest wearing some gloves for this next part.
Reminds me of wintertime.
♪♪ Okay.
So put the smaller bag inside of the bigger... ...and get ready to shake.
No, I mean really shake!
Shake!
Like put all your energy into it!
Shake, shake, shake, shake!
You ice cream needs you to work those arm muscles, okay?
We're talking for at least 7 to 10 minutes.
Here we go!
♪♪ ♪♪ Whew!
Time is up.
Now for my favorite part.
Remove the smaller bag from the large and scoop your ice cream out into a bowl.
♪♪ Feel free to add any toppings you'd like.
But for me, I'll take it just the way it is, because nothing can top sharing homemade ice cream with you.
♪♪ Mmm!
