Born and bred here.
In jail for murdering a farmer, Sam Dolan, 15 years ago.
-So, where were they taking her?
-Just a routine hospital appointment.
I spoke to the prison officers, and they said the road was blocked by this tree.
And when they got out to shift it, your masked man pulled up behind them, shot out a few tires and then handcuffed the officers to the van.
We found these.
-I thought that was a shotgun I heard.
-The weird thing being, Maura Hughes is getting released in 8 months after serving 15 years.
So, why break out now?
It makes absolutely no sense.
-The Range Rover that passed you is registered to Paul and Mary Chambers.
-Well, they're on their jollies.
Cruising round the Canaries.
-How do control room know that?
-They don't, but I was sat next to Mary last week when she was getting her highlights done.
-It's a small place.
You can't so much as sneeze.
-I best behave myself then.
[ Gulls cry ] [ Applause ] -Yay!
-Congratulations!
-[ Excited squeal ] -Oh, I was worried something terrible was gonna happen.

Marlene said that you'd be able to fill us in on this escaped prisoner, Maura Hughes.
-Yeah, uh, I didn't work the case, but I do remember it.
Late one night, Maura phoned 999.
Told the operator that she'd just killed Sam Dolan.
-How?
-Hit him over the back of the head.
-Do we know why?
-She was working on his farm.
Said he'd trumped up some reason not to pay her.
-Look, I know you shouldn't speak ill of the dead, but Sam Dolan was a horrible man.
Like, I remember when I was a wee nipper, you wouldn't dare go near his place.
-Bye.
That was Paul Chambers.
So, the fob for the Range Rover is kept in a kitchen drawer.
Two people have keys to the house.
-And who are they?
-The cleaner, Joyce.
But she's away to Dunfanaghy for a fortnight.
And the other person is the gardener, Michael McVeigh.
-Ah... -What's the big deal with Michael McVeigh?
-He's married to Maura Hughes's sister, Diana.
-And also has a registered firearm.
A shotgun.
♪♪ [ Gulls cry ] [ Cheering ] -Those burgers smell amazing.
-Help yourself.

The supermarket gave us a free trolleyful of food.

Given that the town is named after us.

What she did all those years ago, it broke Diana's heart.

Whoever helped Maura this morning, it wasn't us.
We want nothing to do with her.

I checked the original postmortem report from the case files.
The pathologist found traces of iron in the victim's head wound.
So, the question isn't, "Why the iron?"
It's, "Why does Michael McVeigh care?"

You've just broken in and now you're in the living room of the farmhouse looking for your wages or whatever.

-I can't think of a better reason why he would help Maura dispose of a murder weapon.

-See, I can't help but think, Michael, if we send that away to be tested, we'll prove that it was the weapon used to kill Sam Dolan and that we'll find your DNA on it, too.

-It was me that caused all the trouble.
I was shouting at Dolan, winding him up.
-Then what?
-He pulled his gun and fired.

-I was so scared.
I thought, "If he fires that gun again, he's gonna kill my sister."
So, I picked up the first thing I could find... and hit him over the back of the head with it.
-And what object would that be, then?
-You already know.
I hit him... with the iron.
And you have no idea how good it feels to finally tell someone.
[ Crying ] -My sister saved my life.
If Diana hadn't have killed Dolan, he would have killed me.
I know that.
-And what happened next?
-Diana had everything going for her.
She was our parents' favorite.
Going to university, engaged to Michael.
Then there was me.
What were my prospects?
So, I made a decision.
I yelled at Diana, told her to get out, go home.
She was in shock.
Didn't need telling twice.

I couldn't risk it being tested in case it proved that Diana had killed Dolan.
-So, you took it to the museum?

And I knew how to get into the museum because my mum was a volunteer there.
So, I broke into the museum, stuck it on a shelf and legged it.
Then I found a phone box, dialed 999.
Told them that I had killed a man.
-What was today all about?
Why break out of prison and steal the iron?

♪♪ -We spoke with Barry Pettigrew, who has recently taken over the running of Port Devine Museum.
-Yes, you see, each and every one of these exhibits has a story to tell.
And as an ex-police officer, I'm determined to leave no stone unturned in investigating these stories.
