Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(car engine revving) (bright music) - I didn't know this would be the last of the three.
I suspected that I was writing a trilogy, and the book told me that a little bit more.
But actually, it was only when I got to the very end of the scripts and the very last scene in which Susan Ryeland goes back into the world of 1955 and has one final meeting with Atticus Pund, and even seeing that being shot just a week ago, that I realized that there really was no way to move forward, that we had gone as far as we could.
I think it's quite probable that Leslie would have said no to a fourth, but I think we all felt that this season was really our best work, the best we could do.
It would be impossible to do any better.
And actually, it's one of the tough lessons in TV, but it's a good lesson.
When do you stop?
And I just realized very recently, really, that we had come to the end.
- We've said goodbye to each other twice.
(Susan and Atticus chuckle) But this time, I believe it really is over between us.
- I think we probably have finished with the trilogy on television, but I will say this, there is one more book with Susan Ryeland in my head.
It's called "Merlin Murders."
I doubt we'll ever film it, but I do intend still to write it in about two or three years time.
That's because I do love this idea of the book within the book.
There's so much to play with, especially if I can think up new ideas.
And even if Leslie Manville isn't going to return, I don't want to lose sight of Susan Ryeland.
I like her too much.
- Why not?
You have a huge following.
You don't get rid of me quite that easily.
