Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipwomen in New Jersey Suburban communities are pushing to get out the vote in these final days whether it's to help vice president Harris to become the first women president or to put former president Trump back in office and they aren't limiting their efforts to just New Jersey as senior correspondent Brenda Flanigan reports some women are even crossing the border to make a difference in the crucial swing state of Pennsylvania my neighbors everyone on the streets are putting out sort of like signs very active we're talking about it in the neighborhoods folks are talking about the high intensity high stakes and high anxiety in this deeply divisive election it's driving people to vote early mobilizing residents in normally quiet suburbs as astonished pole worker and Marie landesman turnout has been phenomenal on Saturday we had over 1,400 people here in Madison lots of enthusiasm people are just dying to get into vote they're so excited to cast their vote we do mailings we do phone calls and we're doing our best to get out the vote Republican Kathleen wolan says people are volunteering in Madison to flip New Jersey red but this state hasn't elected a Republican president since Bush 41 in 1988 Democrats see kamla Harris winning blue New Jersey by double digits so they've launched a get out the vote effort where they hope it'll have more impact in a critical swing state nearby Pennsylvania door knocking is the single most important thing you can do to reach voters and and I went last weekend Alex Jennings on weekends drives to the Poconos in Pennsylvania where Volunteers in early October set up a base of operations in a donated house canvases check maps and fan out to knock on doors making their political pitch face to face our station processed 277 canvassers six buses six Stage Coach buses um they came and we processed them all we sent them out to Canvas I mean it is a massive logistical operation and uh we get it done organizer win Kung says New Jersey volunteers reached out to more than 16,000 pennsylvanians this past weekend you know I was so anxious and that's why I moved out here for a month to do this work and since I've been here on the ground every day my anxiety has lessened the more I talk to vot voters again even those who disagree with me the better I feel about it out of you know 50 doors let's say and maybe 10 people came to the door two of those 10 people were undecided so it you know it's really true that people are still undecided if you're living in New York City you're living in new New Jersey and you want to get involved in the presidential race Pennsylvania is as fertile ground as you could find nearby political science Professor Chris Bor lives in the area targeted by rats he says polls show a tossup in the most intense campaign he's ever seen the doors are always being knocked on the the the phone is uh you know buzzing with with text um the mailers are stacking up uh inside your house every time you come home so I think I think there's a a consensus that we're looking to go back to a little quieter time uh in the state but it's good to be coveted Democrats from outside districts have also landed in New Jersey's hottest Congressional race to canvas for Challenger Su Walman Republicans are pouring millions of dollars into the race supporting incumbent Tom K Jr it is an emotional election yeah most of the people I know are voting but I'm worried about the ones who have told me they don't want to vote because they don't like either candidate recently someone stole our yard sign our Harris um sign and I just think you know it's important to go vote um don't steal signs early voting in New Jersey continues through Sunday November 3rd the clock is ticking for those rare undecideds in Madison I'm Brenda Flanigan NJ Spotlight news [Music]
